The crew of Lancaster AJ-A (ED887) 617 Squadron 'Dambusters'
On 16 May 1943 at 21:47, Avro Lancaster AJ-A (ED887) 617 Squadron RAF, flown by S/L Melvin 'Dinghy' Young, took off for an operation on the German dams (Operation Chastise), with the Möhne dam as main target. After a successful operation, Avro Lancaster AJ-A was hit by German anti-aircraft fire near Wijk aan Zee and crashed at 02:58 south of Castricum aan Zee (operation Lancaster AJ-A). All seven crew members lost their lives and are buried in Bergen General Cemetery (North-Holland).

May 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the 'Dambusters' raid. As a tribute to the seven crew members of Lancaster AJ-A a commemorative plaque was unveiled on Friday 18 May 2018, at Castricum aan Zee.
